Origins in China
Matcha’s story starts during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) in China, where tea leaves were steamed, pressed into bricks, and ground into powder before being whisked into hot water. This powdered tea was valued for its potency and meditative qualities, especially among Buddhist monks.

Refined in Japan
In the 12th century, the Zen monk Eisai brought powdered tea seeds and preparation methods from China to Japan. There, matcha found a spiritual home in Zen Buddhism and the tea ceremony (茶道, “chado”). Over time, the Japanese refined the cultivation, shading, and stone-grinding processes that give ceremonial matcha its vibrant color and smooth umami taste.

Global Rise in the 21st Century
In recent decades, matcha has transcended tradition and emerged as a global superfood. Its rich concentration of antioxidants, chlorophyll, and L-theanine makes it a favorite among health-conscious consumers, chefs, and baristas. From matcha lattes to desserts and skincare, its versatility knows no bounds.
