How to Make Matcha

What You’ll Need

  • Leafmill Ceremonial Matcha Powder
  • Matcha whisk (chasen) or milk frother
  • Tea bowl (chawan) or mixing bowl
    Sifter (optional)
  • 2 oz warm water (160–175°F)
  • Optional: milk or cold water for iced matcha or latte
Step one of traditional matcha preparation – scooping ceremonial-grade matcha powder with a bamboo chashaku spoon

Step 1

Sift the Matcha Powder

Sift 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of matcha into a tea bowl to remove clumps and ensure a smooth brew.

Step two of traditional matcha preparation – pouring hot water over ceremonial-grade matcha powder in a chawan tea bowl

Step 2

Add Warm Water

Add 2 oz (60ml) of warm water (not boiling) to the bowl. Ideal temperature: 160–175°F (70–80°C).

Step three of traditional matcha preparation – freshly whisked matcha tea with a rich frothy layer, ready to serve in a chawan bowl

Step 3

Whisk Until Frothy

Whisk in a “W” or “M” motion using a bamboo whisk until frothy.
